What is a bill splitter?

A bill splitter divides a restaurant bill, group order, or shared expense among people — evenly or by unequal shares — after adding an optional tip. It answers “how much do I owe?” without the awkward phone-calculator dance.

How do you split a bill with an uneven amount?

Assign each person a share number proportional to what they owe, sum the shares, and divide the total by that sum to get the value of one share. Multiply each person’s shares by that value. For a $138 bill with shares 1:2:2:3, one share is $17.25, so the split is $17.25 / $34.50 / $34.50 / $51.75.

Common mistakes

• Adding the tip after splitting. Everyone then pays a different effective tip rate.
• Forgetting drinks and sides. Uneven shares only work if the share numbers actually match what people consumed.
