How much flooring do I need for a room?
Multiply length by width for the area, then add 10% for waste. A 12×10 room is 120 ft², or about 132 ft² with waste — roughly 14.7 square yards of carpet. Tile laid on a diagonal can need up to 15% waste.
Common mistakes
- Skipping the waste allowance. Exact-area buying leaves you short at doorways, seams, and pattern matches.
- Mixing price units. Carpet priced by the yard and tile by the foot need different math — the calculator converts for you.
