What is a drywall calculator?
A drywall calculator estimates how many 4×8 or 4×12 sheets you need to cover a room’s walls and ceiling. It converts the room dimensions into sheet counts, subtracts door and window openings, and adds the waste allowance every real job needs.
How this calculator works
- Enter room length, width, and wall height.
- Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height; ceiling area = length × width.
- Subtract doors and windows, then divide by the sheet area (32 or 48 ft²).
- A 10% waste allowance is added for cuts and openings.
How to use the result
- Buy the waste-included number — sheets are cheap compared to a second trip.
- Measure wall height carefully; 8-foot sheets work for standard 8-foot walls, saving cuts.
- Subtract only the actual opening area — double doors and large windows change the count meaningfully.
- Pair the count with screws, tape, and joint compound: roughly one box of screws per 4–5 sheets and one bag of compound per 4–6 sheets.
How many drywall sheets do I need?
Add the wall area (2 × (length + width) × height) to the ceiling area, subtract openings, and divide by the sheet area. A 12×10 ft room with 8-foot walls and a ceiling is about 472 ft² — roughly 15 standard 4×8 sheets, or 17 with waste.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the ceiling. It’s the same material and area as the floor — easily a third of the job.
- Buying no waste allowance. Cuts around openings and imperfect corners eat 10–15% of a sheet order.
- Assuming 8-foot walls need 8-foot sheets only. Horizontal seams and fire-code layouts can change orientation and count.
