How much should I tip?

In the US, 15–20% is standard for sit-down service, with 18% as the common default and 20% for good service. Taxi and salon service often runs 15–20% too. Outside the US, check local norms — many countries include a service charge, and tipping can be optional or even unusual.

Common mistakes

• Double-tipping when service is included. A “service charge” line on the bill means the tip is already there.
• Tipping on the post-tax total. Tipping on the pre-tax bill is the norm; tipping on tax inflates the tip slightly.
• Forgetting to add the tip before splitting. Per-person shares should include the tip everyone agreed to.
