How to use the result

  1. Sanity-check the direction: converting to a smaller unit gives a bigger number (5 km becomes 5,000 m), and the reverse gives a smaller one.
  2. Round to the precision your task needs — a recipe rarely needs more than one decimal, while an engineering drawing may need three.
  3. For temperature, trust the displayed result rather than estimating; the °C↔°F relationship has an offset, so doubling is only a rough guide.
  4. If the number drives a safety-critical call — dosing, load limits, structural dimensions — verify it independently, even by hand with a basic calculator.

How accurate is a unit converter?

The underlying math is exact, because every conversion uses a fixed, internationally agreed factor — one inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm, one pound as exactly 0.45359237 kg. Any small difference you see comes from rounding the displayed result, not from the calculation itself. For everyday tasks the displayed precision is more than enough; only highly specialised engineering or scientific work needs more significant figures.

Common mistakes

  • Treating temperature like a simple multiply — °C to °F needs a ×1.8 and a +32 offset, so scaling alone is wrong.
  • Confusing fluid ounces (volume) with ounces (weight); they measure different things and aren’t interchangeable in recipes.
  • Mixing up US and Imperial gallons — a US gallon is about 3.79 L, an Imperial gallon about 4.55 L, which skews fuel-economy and volume figures.
  • Assuming a kilobyte is always 1,024 bytes; storage labels usually mean 1,000, while operating systems often count 1,024.
  • Assuming “a cup” is universal — a US cup is about 236 mL, a metric cup 250 mL, so baking conversions can drift if you pick the wrong one.
