When should I use mean vs. median?

Use the mean when your data is roughly symmetric and you want the arithmetic centre. Use the median when a few extreme values would drag the mean misleadingly — for example, one billionaire in a town of typical earners. The mean says “average income” is high; the median says most people earn far less.

Common mistakes

  • Reporting the mean on skewed data. It overstates the “typical” value when outliers exist.
  • Confusing mode with median. The mode is the most common value; the median is the middle of the sorted list.
  • Mixing data types. You can’t meaningfully average categories like shirt colours — only the mode applies there.
